What’s Tinnitus?Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no actual external noise is present. It’s often referred to as “ringing in the ears”. Approximately 10% of the adult population reports having some level of tinnitus. The sound can be both loud and soft, high pitch or low pitch, and intermittent or continuous. Furthermore, it can come and go or be permanent. Tinnitus can also occur either as a single sound or multiples sounds, each sound having its own unique quality (i.e. pitch).

Tinnitus, otherwise known as ringing in the ears, is no fun. You’ll quickly realize this if you or someone close to you have it. It can be triggered by excessive noise from traumatic head injuries, exposure to toxic chemicals, and even some medications. Certain prescription drugs can also make the symptoms worse. They’ll be able to tell you whether the sounds in your ears are coming from inside your ears or from some other location in your body by examining several aspects of your hearing and any other symptoms that may be present. After making a diagnosis, your doctor will then determine what treatment is right for you. When it comes to managing tinnitus, there are a number of things that you can do at home. Nicotine patches work well but only used under careful medical supervision while herbal supplements such as Ginkgo biloba and garlic are said to help but should not be taken if you take blood thinners because of possible side effects. Yoga and meditation both can help reduce stress levels which often contribute to allowing tinnitus to flare up more frequently. The most powerful
Yes, the technology is there, but it is not perfect and when it fails, people like me want to get back to analog life. I do listen to music, I do enjoy quiet time with my family and my cat but this is how it should be. People of all ages should be able to enjoy what they want without having to worry about losing their hearing in 10 years or even tomorrow.
