While there is no medically approved treatment for Long COVID, exercise can break the inflammatory cycle that can lead to the development of diabetes and depression months after a person recovers from the virus.
“We know Long COVID causes depression, and we know it can raise blood sugar levels to the point where people develop diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening condition that’s common in people with type 1 diabetes. said Candida Rebello, Ph.D., research scientist at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. “Exercise can help. Exercise can address the inflammation that leads to elevated blood sugar and the development and progression of diabetes and clinical depression.”
It is unclear how many people have been infected with Long COVID. However, estimates range from 15% to 80% of those infected. Based on these numbers, Louisiana may have as many as 1 million residents with chronic COVID-19.
Long-term COVID causes what the Centers for Disease Control describes as “a range of other debilitating symptoms,” including brain fog, muscle aches and fatigue, that can persist for months after a person has recovered from the original infection.
“For example, a person may not be very sick from COVID-19, but six months later, long after the cough or fever has gone away, they will develop diabetes,” said Dr. Rebellious.
One solution is exercise. Dr. Rebello and her co-authors describe their hypothesis in the journal Exercise and Exercise Science Reviews, “Exercise as a Modulator of Persistent Neuroendocrine Symptoms in COVID-19.”
“You don’t have to run a mile or even walk a mile at a brisk pace,” Dr. Rebellious. “Walking is also a form of exercise. Ideally, you will do one 30-minute exercise. But if you can only do 15 minutes at a time, try to do two 15-minute exercises. If you can only walk 15 minutes a day Do this every minute. The most important thing is to try. It doesn’t matter where you start.
“We know that physical activity is a key component of a healthy life. This study shows that exercise can be used to break the inflammatory chain reaction that leads to high blood sugar levels and, in turn, the development or progression of type 2 diabetes. Dr. John Kirwan, Executive Director, Pennington Biomedical Said, who is also a co-author of the publication.
